Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing but the Truth
Greetings from Virginia!
I woke up this morning to the sound of waves from the Atlantic crashing. It is a pleasant change from being landlocked in Georgia where we stayed in the cities of Columbus and Atlanta and the countryside in Helen.
I went there to help out with the elections and thankfully we won back the senate for Rev Warnock and Jon Ossoff. I feel we are off on a wonderful direction.
Unfortunately, the celebration was spoiled by the images I saw on tv with protesters turned to rioters and then into traitors. I am still shaken by the thought of it.
Now I used the word Traitors to describe the president’s supporters because, lets be radically honest, that is what they are. Some consider them to be patriots, but I strongly disagree. Why? Because the Party of Lincoln allowed people who carried the confederate flag into the Capitol. They allowed people wearing nazi clothing into the Capitol. And worse, they tried to justify why they did it. Which begs the question: Are they traitors? Yes and here is why.
In my travels through the south, I had the opportunity to revisit the Civil War, Lincoln, the confederacy and my thoughts around it. Were the Confederates traitors? Yes, because they were rebelled against the Union. So are the supporters of the Confederacies, traitors? How could they not be?
Was Boothe, the man who killed Lincoln a patriot or traitor? If you are a Confederate, you could argue that he was. However, if you are loyal to the Union, to Democracy, then there is no doubt that he is traitor.
How about the conspirators who murdered JFK? They are traitors as well. As well as the person who shot Teddy Roosevelt, murdered MLK, AND shot Reagan. Why? Because they all did what they did in order to undermine our Constitution and for what it stood for. Mainly, the democratic process on which our nation was founded.
The result is that we are no longer a country of leaders. And we have to be honest about it, because what got us here was dishonesty. Most Americans are too chicken shit to look at themselves and ask the hard questions. We have been lied to so much that we don’t even know what is true. Here is the truth: We are a nation founded on racism that is deeply rooted and denied that healing cannot possibly happen. White supremacy is alive and well and on January 6, 2021 we AND the world saw it.
Now our nation is in crisis of leadership (Which is has been for too long), and many people are wondering where to go from here. My thought it is that we continue working for justice. It is easy to fall into despair. I did. I do know that there is no time for it. There is only time to capitolize on the opportunity to be the country we are meant to be. A country of justice. Only then can we begin to mend what was destroyed. Sadly, we won’t see that justice unless we are first seek truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Until then, we will continue to be fucked.
So in the words of SENATOR Rafael Warnock, “Get your shoes on, get ready!”
