My logo, or my personal mark, as I like to call it is a combination of a new moon, which in Hawaii, is called Hilo and a Viper.

Hilo, also happens to be the name of my late German shepherd, who was a dear companion to me. He crossed over several years ago and I wanted to keep him in my life. This was a proper way to honor my best friend of long ago. I also lived in Hawaii for several years so I wanted to honor the island as well.

In ancient tradition, the new moon was a symbol for new beginnings, forgiveness, a time for pause and reflection. I feel that in life, it is important to take time, reflect and make adjustments and most importantly, move forward. It also resembles the letter C, which of course, is my initial.

On a side note, when I first began my journey into graphic design, I knew nothing of symbolism or typography. I used a similar moon, but it simply lacked the depth and nuance this design has.

I suppose that is just a designer thing.

The Serpent came to me one day in my meditation. I learned that indigenous cultures, the serpent was a sign of protection, healing, strength and wisdom. It resonated with me because of my background as a medic and my admiration for nature and strength.

To create the mark, I played with various methods of designing the crescent moon sliver freehand and with texture. Simple in design and execution, complex in meaning. Just the way I like it.

The Serpent was a little more involved. Again, I drew it freehand, but in the end felt it would be most symbolic of I traced an actual viper.

It may evolve further, but for now this works for me.

I like the color red, especially a deep blood red for its primal feeling. Red has a lot of meaning attached to it, but I’m sure you get it.
